Home made Horlicks/Energy Drink Mix
Most of us would have loads of memories associated with Horlicks, isn’t it? It’s surely one of the most popular malted energy drink. As is the case with most store bought products, this too is loaded with chemicals and preservatives. So, the most natural instinct would be to try a home made version with available ingredients. The biggest hurdle in replicating such stuffs is to convince folks
at home. Most of us have a preconceived notion about many things and we are not ready to adapt to changes and new things. A big example is my hubby 🙂 I made this around a month ago and sent it to my sister and she said she liked it (she would like anything that’s home made and healthy 🙂 ). I had kept around two tablespoons of it with me. Two days back, I got a chance to serve this to my hubby. He remarked that it could have been a tad bit sweeter and that isn’t sieved well and he could feel some almond skin. So maybe one could add little more sugar and maybe add blanched almonds without the skin.
I found the taste to be very earthy and nice, maybe a bit better than Horlicks. But then, why to compare? As long as we know what ingredients go into it and it’s free of any chemicals, we can be happy, don’t you all agree? Its always better to make a small batch and finish off it in 2-3 weeks. Why don’t you guys try it out? And please do not forget to share your feedback and suggestions with me either in the blog or you can email me at pradeepa.nair0@gmail.com
Ingredients:
- Organic wheat flour 2/3 cup
- Organic Barley flour 1/3 cup
- Milk powder 2/3 cup
- Organic cane sugar 1/3 cup
- Almonds 1/2 cup
- Cashew nuts 1/3 cup
Method:
- Heat a heavy flat based pan and dry roast the Barley powder on low flame till its light brown in colour. Transfer this into a bowl.
- Now roast the wheat flour and mix it with the barley flour.
- Roast the cashew nuts and almonds till they are a bit crunchy.
- Cool the roasted flours completely.
- Pulse the almonds and cashewnuts into a fine powder.
- Sieve it and add it to the cooled barley and wheat flour mixture.
- Furthermore, add required cane sugar or powdered white sugar to the above mixture.
- Now add milk powder and mix well.
- Store it in clean and dry airtight container.
- Mix a tablespoon with a cup of warm water or milk or a combination of milk and water. Stir well and a yummy and healthy energy drink is ready 🙂
Notes:
- You can increase the nutritive value and the taste by using powder of sprouted barley and wheat.
- You may increase the sugar to around half a cup if you prefer a sweeter drink.
- Most of the recipes I saw, had around one cup of milk powder. I have deliberately reduced the amount of milk powder, as it is store bought. But feel free to use more milk powder if you wish to.
- One can add roasted peanut powder too along with other nuts.
- You can use any measuring cup to measure the ingredients.
- Feel free to vary the proportion of wheat flour and barley flour.
- Always use fresh and good quality ingredients for a healthier and tastier drink.
- To make it gluten free, you can use sprouted ragi flour or jowar/sorghum flour.
