Olan
It is my first Onam after launching my blog, so I am planning to add a few Kerala sadya (feast) delicacies in my blog. So far I have been very lucky with my blog and every day, it is receiving more than 100 views.
Olan is a very simple and mildly spiced side dish which is generally made during any traditional sadya may it be Onam, Vishu or Pirannal (star birthday). It is a combination of raw white pumpkin or yellow pumpkin cooked with white or red lobia (cow peas) and green chillies and salt. Finally thick coconut milk is added to it and then garnished with coconut oil and fresh curry leaves. It’s that simple 🙂
Ingredients:
- Pumpkin 200 gm
- Red/white lobia
- Salt to taste
- Green chillies 3-4
- Thick coconut milk 80-100 ml
- Coconut oil 2 tsp
- Curry leaves 2 sprigs
Method:
- Soak the lobia in water for 2-3 hours.
- Wash the yellow pumpkin and cut it into 1 inch flat thin slices.
- Cook it with little water with salt and green chillies.
- Meanwhile pressure cook the lobia with little salt till it is fully cooked.
- Now add the cooked lobia to the pumpkin pieces.
- Add thick coconut milk and just bring it to a boil. Do not boil.
- Add curry leaves and sprinkle coconut oil on top. Its ready to be served 🙂
